The purpose of this project is to illustrate the interconnected nature of medieval trade. Combining Arab, Viking, Chinese, and Byzantine sources, I tried to represent visually the trade, exchange of ideas, and exchange of culture in the world between the tenth and thirteenth centuries. The modern view of the world at this time is that life was localized and cut off from the world at large. This project, and the Neatline map specifically, illustrate how goods and ideas traveled far from their places of origin to influence and affect the many peoples and places they came into contact with.
