Above are some screenshots from the project that my partner Rob and I worked on in class last week. I think the mapping technology that is being used here is very effective in helping give a visual image of ideas of information that has happened over a large area of space. In the opposite aspect it makes it weak when it comes to history in a certain location because it depends on the trail of location points to tell a story. With our map we wanted to both get an understanding of the software but also to tell the story of Duke Kahanamoku’s impressive Olympic swimming efforts. In showing his achievements it gives us insight into the social weight he had when he came to Southern California and began his push for surfing. Between 1912 and 1924 Duke won 3 gold medals and 1 silver medal for swimming and which gave him the connections to be able to move to California.
